A cure for SCI by the Christopher Reeve organisation?!?!

I wrote a blog post a year or so ago called 'A cure for spinal cord injury will not be announced on this site'.

Apparently, it should have been called 'A Cure for SCI will BE announced by the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation (CDRF) on my blackberry'.

Just a few minutes ago I received an email from CDRF telling me that they are now, "Succesfully getting people out of their wheelchairs right now. Today, it really is a reality."

Right after that the little red blackberry light lit up with emails from my blog followers. There were two groups. One that wrote to tell me how great this is, and the second group who were pissed off that CDRF could even state something like this.

Wow!

Yesterday I was crippled and 'right now' I can get out of my wheelchair. What a load of crap aimed entirely at fundraising.

First they get Christopher Reeve's kids to state that CDRF's NeuroRecoveryNetwork (NRN) using epidural stimulation is the thing that Mr. Reeve would have been most proud of and then they link it to "getting people out of wheelchairs".

Most importantly, the NRN is not getting people out of their wheelchairs with all the implications this means; secondly, how do we know what a dead man thinks?

Of all the hype, false hope, and unabashed fundraising, this one takes the cake. Not only will people be fooled by this false announcement, they will feel let down when they realise that it's not true. This is the worst disservice of all.

I know what they'll say to spin it. They're going to say that it ONLY means people standing up, from time to time, on their own. And that it means people may be stepping, but this is NOT 'getting people out of their wheelchairs'. The vast majority will take this statement to mean CURE - permanently out of their wheelchairs. Why? Because the biggest SCI injury foundation on earth has declared it.

This false hope to raise donations, and using Christopher Reeve's kids to do it, is the worst display at a money grab that I've ever seen in the CURE communuity.

I won't argue with them about the benefit of NRN on the paralysed body, but it is NOT 'getting people out of wheelchairs'.

So before I comment any further, I will ask the CEO of CDRF to comment on this claim. If they are truly 'getting people out of wheelchairs', I'll eat my hat and kiss CDRF's CEO on the lips in Macy's window.

  1. Hey Dennis

Do you leave Wise alone with his claims because you use his website?

If anybody is making premature claims it's Wise

  2. Wise has to have somebody to cheer him on. Give Dennis a break! Wise can't back all his claims so he just deletes the entire website. CDRF is NO different!

If you had even half a brain you'd stop posting comments in a blog that has nothing to do with your hate campaign. Go make your own blog Troll Bob.

He does just fine without you. If he could have made you rich in your lawsuit or given your kid a basketball team at Rutgers that you wanted, you'd be signing his praises and be his best friend. You're quite the hypocrite Troll Bob. You didn't make millions in your lawsuit and your kid didn't end up with a basketball team in NJ. You're a sore loser!

    2. This is too funny...look at Bob calling the kettle black about someone else's wrong doings. Bob is the one with wrong doings. 6. Yet you only focus on CDFR. You are never critical of SSPF even when they make outlandish hyperbolic claims on Twitter and in the mail ilke "A cure is JUST AROUND THE CORNER" and a link to donate to them. JUST AROUND THE CORNER? LIKE ANY DAY NOW??? WOW?!!!!!!!! They've been fundraising for years but where are there contributions? They have not made any research awaords in YEARS. But, you and Paola are so far up Ida's butt with the XPRize idea that still hasnt happened you give them a pass? How about the Neilsen group who everyone ooohed and awed over at W2W? Have you looked at HOW LITTLE they actually give overall? The minimum legal amount allowed to keep there tax classification. Whwere are your campaigns for THOSE companies? You like to cherry pick. You like to twist things YOUR way. I read the CDFR plead it did't say CURE nowhere. YOU twisted the words and nowhere have you linked the original so people could see for themself. no. JUST YOUR TWISTED HATEFILLED VERSION. Not very profesional for one of your campaigns.

    1. What is this SSPF that makes outlandish claims on twitter and in the mail? Never heard of it before.

Dennis, when did you do a blog post about XPRize of Neilsen group?

It seems the comments here are about everything but your blog post. They range from Wise Young, Drunk Leif, SSPF (whatever that is), Neilsen group and a Chihuahua dog called Paolo. How can one "cherry pick" through all these comments and not burst into hysterical laughter? I think some of these people have more wrong with them than meets they eye. There's a ton of trolls on the internet and they seem to want to twist your blog into something it's not. Sad deal.

    2. No, all that junk is more ramblings from crazy troll Bob. He hasn't been banned from the CDRF Sam Maddox site so he doesn't want anyone to upset. Bob would do anything to save the reputation of CDRF since he's been banned off the carecure and apparelyzed SCI internet forum. Bob has selective alliances. Save CDRF from themselves because they haven't banned Bob from posting dribble about Wise. It doesn't matter that they're wasting donations and don't do a thing for curing people with paralysis.

    4. Well, don't forget that Bob demands Dennis make a sci forum to post his dribble into too. Bob won't do any work himself, but he's good at making such demands of people like Dennis. You won't see troll Bob offering to pay 10k per year for having such a sci forum. Bob is long on criticism...and short on brains. You're obviously grossly misinformed about research funding along with the Neilsen Foundation that major funders of spinal cord injury research. These are not companies. These are non-profit foundations, not companies (another major gaff of misinformation and lack of knowledge) If you're going to post here, at least take the time to get your facts straight.

    1. The Neilsen Foundation and Sam Schmidt Foundation both fund big time into paralysis cure. Their projects and contributions are enormous!!! On the other hand, CDRF only fund their little select "do nothing" labs. You won't see any publications or serious research coming out of those good old boy labs. There's no incentive for them to produce anything. Just the little buddies of Susan Howley get money and boy do they love being on the dole. Those guys cemented lifetime careers and don't have to produce a thing. No scientific achievements, no prestigious publications, no incremental steps to a curative therapy. It doesn't get more embarrassing than that for CDRF. I wouldn't donate a penny for that. It's a total waste of time and a major joke in the neurological science field.

      Delete
  9. Face it, no researcher at W2W sang the praises of CDRF or acknowledged the Reeve foundation because they none of them got funded by them. In fact, nobody working on sci research gets funding from them that will cure paralysis. They put the responsibility of SCI cure research funding all on the shoulders of other foundations like Neilsen, Wings 4 Life, Spinal Research, U2FP and Research for Cure. Let's STOP pretending that CDRF is involved with anything cure related. Only their messages try to go there to get funds for their $350,000.00 CEO wages each year. That only scratches the surface of waste at the feel good org of Reeves.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. When supporters or funders are given recognition at the end of a scientific research presentation, you won't see the Reeve Foundation listed because they simply do not give financial support to research on curative therapies to help paralyzed people. Simple as that. Why would a scientist get up and thank CDRF for being in existence? That silly notion is absurd! Reeve's Foundation gives nothing, therefore, they get nothing. Period.

      Delete
    2. It's hard for people to realize and accept the truth here. They've been spoon fed all the hype and twisted advertising messages that are off target at the Reeve Foundation. If they don't know that CDRF doesn't pay for research, why would anyone not getting funding or support even know they exist? Nobody applies to Reeve's for anything. The money given to Reeve's by the public just goes into the black hole and not one dime goes into helping research or funding for curative therapies that could help people suffering paralysis. Sometimes it's just easier to believe all the cartoon ads and hope someone else does all the hard lifting. Christopher Reeve would never have put up with the vultures at his foundation. They would have been shoved out to the curb.

      Delete
  10. Not so long ago the Reeve foundation announced the epi-stem as a cure and flogged the airwaves with hyperbole, and this year it just happens to be the NRN that cured SCI. It's all a farce and everyone knows it. The cure or anything related to a curative therapy will NOT come as a result of the Reeve Foundation efforts. That's just the fact. They have nothing for the millions and millions of people throughout the world that are sitting in wheelchairs. They don't have one little therapy that will help a paralyzed person in a chair and they aren't going to have one. When will people realize that the vultures are picking the bones of a dead man legacy with attributing words and ideas to things he never said in order to line their own pockets with money? It's insane that even those with the simplest of minds cannot figure that out. CDRF doesn't fund research for people that are paralyzed. If you're into feel good, climbing mountains and dressing up for gala dinners to support the astronomical salaries of the bloated hierarchy, then by all means, hand them your wallets! There's lots of FOOLS at large here.

  11. NRN didn't get anyone out of a wheelchair in any sense of the word that the public thinks they're supposed to be working on. The don't work on a cure, they don't fund curative research and they exaggerate accomplishments that amount to beans for paralyzed people. Let me know when NRN gets me out of my chair. I'd give them the donation they're begging for if they actually did that for me or any other group of people suffering the ravages of paralysis. They'll stoop to anything in order to keep the general public thinking they're curing spinal cord injury. A disservice indeed. It's all about keeping their high paid staff happy and cozy. It's been a travesty for the sci community for many year now. If people only knew the real story of what goes on there.

    ReplyDelete
  12. AAACKKK! More Reeve publicity stunts for public donations. They're going to start funding research and cure measures for people in wheelchairs? Now that's a NEW phenomena! I wish they'd just top all that silly nonsense. I'd pay them just to disappear off the SCI scene. Who needs this kind of devious fundraising scheme?

  13. Well to all those unpleased with whats going on your reasons for condemnation could also be applied to Wise.
Wise uses the notion of Christopher Reeve often
He solicits for a therapy which seems you will need a large imagination to think you are walking
Oh and what did he spend all your justadollarplease dollars on? He ran to the bank to withdraw the funds when he saw they were getting questioned.
Oh and by the way about Dennis not doing anything to promote Wise I would say doing nothing about how Wise operates is actually doing something, it's called withholding damning comments. So in that way Dennis supports the continuation of what Wise does

If you want to know about real research, you can see who gets NIH (National Institute of Health) research funding at NIH RePorter website. All the key projects and bench side investigators are listed there. You won't find Young there. He hasn't applied for a grant in over a decade but solicits from the community. That's your first clue.

  19. It's highly doubtful that umbilical cord blood cells and lithium will do anything. There's no scientific evidence or large animal studies ever completed that makes it compelling. Any persistent walking program will activate the central pattern generator. The key is for the walking program to potentially not cause more harm (falling accidents and hyper knee extensions). Don't waste money paying for this clinical trial to happen in China. If the treatment is that promising you can be assured the Chinese government will pony up to pay for the trials and take the top position in the world as the only country to have cured SCI. Don't waste money paying for such trash treatments either. Once the cells are injected, there's no way to get rid of them if they're causing you harm in the future.

    1. Reputable scientists say it's best to not be the first person enrolled in such safety trials. If they're taking 50 people, you want to be #51. There are promising therapies being worked on. It will take a bit longer however. It's best to wait for these therapies and keep an eye on the work being done in the top NIH funded labs. If you jump the gun and get used as a lab rat in a less than promising trial, you won't be eligible for the really good ones that are working their way forward. People will tell you that after they've had their savings accounts cleaned out and their MRI's are showing tumors growing in their cords. Be safe, not sorry.

  20. Here is a Quote by Dennis ((( When a giant SCI org makes claims of this magnitude, we are forced to say something, or relinquish our rights and responsibilities in the future. Let me change the word "claim" to "irresponsible utterance". I think on this site we all know that they have not cured paralysis, and that's because we have spent some time trying to educate ourselves, but not every paralysed person has and the newly paralysed and their families haven't had the time yet. What this "irresponsible utterance" does is lessens the urgency of cure. "CDRF has people out of wheelchairs already, there's no rush from now on." This is what this kind of statement can lead to. CDRF has already done it so there is no need for more money in California or Minnesota. Remember, lawmakers are not experts, and phrases like this, from a very reputable organisation are believed. I would also prefer not to have this discussion, but what we learned from the Rick Hansen campaigns is that if we don't challenge organisations, they don't change. Is this our responsibility? Yes, 100 percent. )))
Isn't it odd he stated that on the website of a so called researcher that over a year ago announced people are walking!!!!!!!!!!! Come on Dennis your statement should apply to Wise also

Not everyone shares in your delight of slander against Wise but then you only come here and perform like that to retaliate and seek revenge. You need to stop this mental game and leave others alone. What besides drink and antisemitism is driving you to rant and rage about someone you call troll bob. It's obvious you are the person with the enormous vendetta. And talking about false hope and funds being wasted especially funds donated by those with spinal cord injury is certainly a credible topic. At least your troll friend bob makes some good points, you on the other hand are totally guilty of what you accuse him of.

  30. I give no false hope and I don't solicit funds. I also don't bully Dennis into doing dirty deeds either. You shouldn't be so lazy. If you want credible topics, then make your own blog. The troll Bob Katz in New Jersey should take ownership for being a bully and stalker and leave this comment section alone. It's not his blog space to harass Wise Young and this isn't carecure. Bob got himself banned, so he spreads his hate and vendetta here all the time. 32. you mean this Bob who sent this letter July 2012 to the president of Rutgers:
    Robert L. Barchi

With much sadness, I write to inform your office regarding what I and many others (including other researchers, ethicists and people with spinal cord injuries and their families) have witnessed the unethical way Dr. Wise Young is soliciting donations for his clinical trial network.
Recently Dr Young appeared on a CNN documentary Selling A Miracle? Investigates Controversial Stem Cell Therapy Clinics, calling Geeta Schroff a fraud with un proven claims of success in treating spinal cord injury. In addition on his website "CARECURE" he goes into great lengths wearing his badge of honor as a member of mainstream medicine to explain in great detail how one should not make premature claims:

You must have controls. Otherwise, it is very easy to convince yourself that a therapy is working when it is actually not. It is so easy to jump to the conclusion that something is working. My heart leaps whenever an investigator in trials that I am doing says that somebody is walking or whatever. Objectivity is not possible when you care.
    Wise.
from the thread: Is Dr. Geeta Shroff in India still taking patients?

Yet, Dr Young has himself made claims of people walking in his trial at his open house meetings with cord blood and lithium, prior to completion of the trial and even before it was published in a medical journal for peer review. By the way, he used the same tactic to get methylprednisoone approved as a treatment for acute sci, which years later after peer review is not seen as a standard of care and now has warnings against its use.

This type of science by press conference is no way for a legitimate researcher to raise funds for his trial. He also made this claim at a cord blood conference in New Zealand recently:
Young says his research will bring hope to sufferers of spinal cord injuries whom to date, medicine has not been able to treat in any meaningful way. “It’s achievable not just within our lifetime, but within a few years,” said Young. “I believe we can fix a person enough so that someone who doesn’t know them wouldn’t know that that person has a spinal cord injury. To me that’s a cure!” http://www.cordbank.co.nz/cordbank-news/dr-wise-young-speaks-about-spinal-injury-cord-blood/
This is over hyping and preying on people and their families who are desperate. In my opinion Dr Young is a salesman wearing a white lab coat! His soliciting funds through the Rutger's University Foundation at http://www.justadollarplease.org/ is embarrassing to the integrity of the University and also to mainstream medicine.

    1. And 16 months later, Robert L Barchi has done nothing. There's your clue troller.

  33. In fact even one year later on the Christopher Reeve web Sam Maddox thought even then it was to soon to make the claims Wise Young did. http://www.spinalcordinjury-paralysis.org/research/2013/06/30/china-sci-study-premature-mid-trial-speculation-

    1. As I said before, troll Bigbob, you have selective alliances. You don't want anyone to say anything about CDRF because they haven't banned you from posting there because they want all SCI donations to go to them even they though they are doing nothing for chronic sci. Do you have any idea how much Maddox is paid off the backs of sci people? Honestly, you have some pretty narrow visions due to your hatred campaign.

      Delete
    2. And what about the next year, and the next year? Your vendetta against Wise has been going on for years. It's time to call it a day and do something worthwhile. We cannot wait for another five years for Sam Maddox to give a jab. That's stupid!

  34. You'll stop at nothing troll Bob. Hopefully Dr. Young has a protection order or security. You're the most vile and devious kind of stalker. No wonder people want nothing to do with you. It's a good thing you've been banned from all the sci forum.

  35. Imagine that; a vengeful internet troller that also sends hate mail to somebody's job. Poor troller Bigbob doesn't know that all of his hateful posts had already been filed at the University? Now the hate mail had a lot of impact didn't it stalker dweeb? Not one thing has changed for the guy you hate so much. Let it go troll. This is crazy junk. Leave Wise alone.

  36. Barchi if you remember did nothing with the abusive coach Rice incident until it went virile. Same might happen here again. As far as the letter, I find it rather upsetting that current checks and balances allow something like this to happen. Going into a human trial without sound pre clinical work exaggerating/hyping results prematurely and soliciting funds from people with sci is beyond kind. Oh and what about those justadollarpleasefunds anyway?

    ReplyDelete
  37. In addition a well know bio-ethicist suggested and proof read that letter to Barchi

    ReplyDelete
  38. You live in a dream world not based on reality if you wait on Barchi. He's there to stay as you've already witnessed. Nothing is going "virile" in a comment section either. That's makes your vengeance nothing more than a nuisance in an unrelated blog.

  39. What have you heard from Reeve Dennis? What's next?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Start the petition Dennis so we can all sign it. Let's get the CEO fired.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Why fire the CEO of CDRF? Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation and Neilsen Foundation which actually funds a huge share of good chronic sci research are being attacked here by a poster above. Get out on the internet and type in "cure for spinal cord injury" and see what you get. Every good sci organization, sci meeting and extraordinary researcher working for chronic SCI cure are being trounced, smeared and insulted. Why anybody would want to enter this arena to help is beyond comprehension.

  41. The CEO will never be fired. He brings in big donation dollars and that's exactly what they're after. He's invincible because of money.

  42. Some people like to live in a fairy-tale and believe the hype and bs streaming from those extraordinary researchers. Their message is well planned and tuned to the point it's premeditated corruption. How they could do this to people with spinal cord injury just shows where their morals are. Be really careful of the ones that have a resume saying their father said you are too honest to be a business man so I became a doctor.

  43. Hopefully people can start to figure out who the clowns are and who the dedicated scientists are that are willing to help and giving it all they've got. There's a big difference. A little bit of research on the subject makes all the difference.

  44. " Why anybody would want to enter this arena to help is beyond comprehension. " Hmmmm where did I hear that, it sounds familiar?
Yes, I remember now, I heard it from the guy who gave us the first treatment for sci which since has been discredited. But fear not, he now claims his patients are walking.
BTW "Arena" is a good word to describe that community of hype and bs and premature claims. It's so unscientific

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Arena means "field". You don't understand synonyms troll Bigbob?

      Delete
  45. That goes to show you good reputable scientists aren't given the support, funding or recognition they deserve. An arena of advocates that don't bother to help in any way. But instead they gripe, moan, complain, find fault and make stupid demands. Of course the best draw is going to be towards the one hyping and making bs claims. The community won't stand for support, learning and helping the good scientific work coming forward. It's no wonder a cure is slow coming.

  46. Dennis, did Jim or Wise ever warn you about saying anything negative about Wise?

His chief fundraiser Jim had this to say:

((("The thing that makes me shake my head in bewilderment is the fact that without Dr. Young and this great website he founded, some of the 501(c)3 foundations that were formed because they used this website as a springboard, would not exsit and yet they sometimes seem to be the ones to instigate the whispers here and there that Dr. Young is some how off the mark and he needs to be reeled in and brought to instant justice with embarrassing posts on the very forum he dedicated his life too!!")))
Oh and what's even worse is the emails they send to posters that question Dr Young.

Does he manipulate his trial results that way also?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Case in point. No matter what else happens, the poster above (troller Bigbob) wants to publicize Wise. In the meantime, nobody wants to talk about the great research taking place in the field, scientists lack of funding and support by the community, etc. It's all about carecure and Wise in this comment section so people would think he's the SCI cure king. In reality, the problems are SO much bigger than Bob Katz's revenge and vendetta against Wise and Rutgers. It's a sad situation when a fruitcake can't get his out of his ass and see the bigger picture.

    2. Shit Bigbob! There are no trial results yet. Stop posting stupid shit.

      Delete
    3. This one is laughable. The troller is back to using goofy fu**ing conspiracy theories again to drum up hatred and publicity for Wise. Who's the famous guy? Oh, it's Jesse Ventura! All Bigbob lacks now is sex and intrigue. Wait for it...it'll be coming soon.

      Delete
  47. He's still trying to get people to join his vendetta and hatred job against Wise Young. If only Wise had helped Bob Katz get millions of dollars from a hospital lawsuit, or if Wise would have made a basketball team for his kid old Bigbob troller would be happy. Nobody can change these things so it's sad that Bigbob has never heard the word NO before. He's been banned from carecure and apparelyzed sci forums. It's no wonder when he comes here to spread lies. Who the hell said any trial results have been manipulated. They aren't even published. The troller wonders why there is no translation and cures yet? Well, take a guess on it. !!
